It takes place at least "several millennia" after God Emperor of Dune ends [based on the dust jacket], but a blurb inside implies it could be as much as ten thousand years after the fourth book. As a result, it is hard to quantify. The tempo of the book changes; it starts off 'slow' and plods along until the latter third-to-fourth of the book.
