In a single day, this small Mongolian mare made fifty-one round-trips carrying nearly five tons of explosives to various gun sites. Sergeant Reckless was her name, and she was the horse renowned for carrying wounded soldiers on and off the battlefield and making solo trips across combat zones to deliver supplies. A widely celebrated national hero, Reckless was first featured in 1954 in the Saturday Evening Post and more recently in 1997 when LIFE magazine published an edition lauding history’s one hundred all-time heroes. Equine enthusiast Robin Hutton learned about Sergeant Reckless and spearheaded the effort to commission a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle (Quantico), VA. In July of 2013, the statue was unveiled. A second monument is planned for Camp Pendleton, where Reckless lived out her days and is buried. Hutton has now written the first-ever full biography of Sergeant Reckless, who earned two Purple Hearts for her heroic efforts (among other military decorations). I very much enjoyed almost all of the first three parts of this work. The story of this horse is truly amazing, and it shines a light on a war that ugly and difficult and often forgotten without spending inordinate amounts of time on individual battles, personalities and maneuvers unrelated to Reckless' story. I want to express great fulfillment in taking my than 91 year old dad to the 72nd anniversary of the Iwo Jima in 2016 at Camp Pendleton. He was a 19 year old Marine Amtrak Tank Driver during the Iwo Jima invasion. An amazing story of an amazing mare during the Korean War. The American forces in the Korean "conflict" used the recoiless rifle, nicknamd the reckless. The shells were 25 pounds and volatile. Usually only 2 could be carried at a time and from some of the places it was fired from a jeep could not get to transport the shells so yhe runners were alwaysnen of the unit. I thoroughly enjoyed this true story of Sgt Reckless.It takes place during the Korean war. Marines were havingdifficulty in keeping gun sites supplied with enough ammo. Theterrain was steep and rugged. Jeeps couldn't even make it upthe terrain. So a horse was purchased for $250 from a Koreanrace track. The horse was trained, put through "hoof" camp. Don't get me wrong - the story behind this book is truly amazing. Sgt. Reckless was a charismatic and idiosyncratic horse who's acts of amazing bravery earned her the title of a marine. Great true story, but I have to say I wasn't in love with the writing. The author obviously pored so much devotion into the research for this book, and I'm sure it was no easy task. However, the critical side of me says it was not put together into a cohesive and captivating story. The characters came and went
