Narration In Favor Of Books The Other Side of Heaven
Nearly forty years have passed since I began my first mission to Tonga. At the urging of many people whom I admire, I have attempted to describe some of the experiences and feelings I encountered those many years ago. The main purpose of this book is to emphasize the overwhelming need for faith in our lives.
I realize that in some ways I am describing a time and a place and circumstances that no longer exist. Yet in other ways, I am describing feelings and challenges that are as old as time and as fresh as the morning sun. I am convinced that regardless of the physical background or the decade our life's experiences are cast against, the need for love and faith to bring meaning to our lives and reason for our decisions remains unchanged.
I do not apologize for the time, the place, or the circumstances described, as that was the way it was. I suppose most people who have passed through this planet earth have lived and died closer to the type of life described herein than the hectic one we live in America today. We all need more faith, and I know we can learn from others.
In looking back and reading letters and other items written at the time, I have tried to describe how I felt then. I had no feeling that I was going into a particularly hard situation or that things were going to be tough. I had no thought of doing anything unusual, but rather simply wanted to do my best to get through each day doing as much good and as little damage as possible.

I had seen the movie years ago but I finally got around to reading the book. I enjoyed it- it made me wish I had gone on a church mission- even though I know his experience in Tonga in the 1950s is far from ordinary. The stories were very well told- the spiritual incite he gained were some of my favorite and least favorite parts- he was quite repetitive. Fairy quick read- you can tell he was just telling his story- not really an author but it's always interesting to read a non-fiction story. IThis book was very inspiring to me! I really enjoyed the stories the author told about his mission to Tonga. The experiences he had there were from hilarious to life-threatening! He faced a storm on one of the islands that nearly killed him by the lack of food. Even his venture to Tonga is filled with stories about how he was stopped in different places with many challenges. After watching the movie I really wanted to read this book. I'm glad I did because you get so much more detail about John Groberg's experience on his mission. The book is packed with faith promoting stories and is a wonderful book that missionaries will cherish.
I loved this memoir. It is about John Groberg's many and varied experiences on a religious mission to Tonga. After each experience the author briefly talks about what he learned, and likens it to our lives. I found the entire book to be very inspiring and motivating. I love learning true principles through stories that capture my attention. I loved listening to this book and I want to buy a hard copy for my 12-year old son to read. An excellent explanation of the feelings and experiences of a full-time missionary. Though I served half on a different hemisphere and many years later, the real core of being a missionary is pretty universal. I love the movie, and it is very accurate with the moments it depicts, but there are many more in the book, some of which offer interesting gospel insights. I think my favorite of the events not in the movie was "The Lord's Wind." He was praying so hard for a good wind to get to an island
I enjoyed the book. I don't think it's one I'll ready over and over, but certainly every few years or so. Elder Groberg is pretty darn amazing, and the things he learns are downright awesome. It's amazing to me that he was able to get so much wonderful knowledge during this time. I loved his open and honest way of telling his stories and the way he felt about people and situations. I found it a very uplifting read.
I listened to this as an audiobook and really enjoyed it! I found all the stories really interesting and uplifting. Elder Groberg has such a strong and faithful spirit and I was impressed by many gospel and life insights he picked up from all of his experiences. The Tongan people and culture so was so interesting to learn about as well. I thought the book was going to be super different from the movie adaption, but they actually had a lot more overlap than I thought. Of course the movie still
