Well... I definitely enjoyed reading it, but at the same time hated it. It was very depressing and of course that's how it was meant to be, but afer finishing it I feel kinda of... empty and.. crappy. Feeling negative emotions from a piece can be quite invigorating or enlightening (or some other word I have trouble finding atm) but I feel like I didn't gain much from this book. Maybe I was just too familiar with the themes it explored so I didn't exactly get any insight into something new but

4 stars for the original, Finnish version of the novel and 3 for the Hungarian translation.

I have the feeling that Sofi Oksanen was still searching for her style while writing this book. It had a good flow to it and wasn't too difficult to read. But Oksanen's style in this novel is still somewhat stumbling, searching, not quite ripe yet. The plot is interesting but she never goes into depth with the issues the characters are struggling with, there are too many empty spaces, too many questions left. The character Piki is quite well described but somehow I never clicked with her. I

no no no no... this book didnť do anything to me :-(lesbien couple, at first it seems everything is perfect and then we learn that both are depressed and one even maniac... quarrels, misunderstandings, yelling, knife, breaking-up, trying to be so "heterosexual", depressed... depressed.. depressed..i was hoping the book will tell me more about mania but even this is there only in hints..nothing.. maybe wrong timing for me..

A nice flow, pretty nice subject. Kallio in the 90's, partying, lesbian scene. Loved it.Still, not for me and pretty mediocre.The writing itself was very good, not complaining.I have a feeling my mom would've loved this. There's something very recognisable in this from my childhood. Hmm.
