This is one of the best books I've read in ages: resonant, entertaining, and affecting. At the first level of craft, Kneale's ability to make distinctive and authentic nearly every one of it's full chorus of voices is masterful. But it's more than that. The book's narrative follows two separate trajectories which intersect only briefly, towards the end of the book, and then again diverge; they could well have been two separate books.
